Tootsie

Post by WhiteElkStag » Thu Apr 28, 2011 11:30 pm

Thirteen years ago when I was 11, I found Tootsie at my old elementary school. She was about three weeks old, covered in mange and half starved. The art teacher had been kind enough to give her a bowl of water, and there was a empty can of spam next to her. My friend and I gave her some food and then used our shoe laces to lead her back to my house. We let her loose just before we came around the corner and told my parents that she'd followed us home. Of course, we forgot to put our shoe laces back onto our shoes, and last year my parents told me that they knew all along that we'd led her back. It took 12 weeks of medicine to cure the mange, and she spent the rest of her life making extra fur and spreading it all over my parents bed to make up for it.

Tootsie never took to training but she was the sweetest most loyal dog I've ever known. She loved to go hiking and swimming with me whenever we could. Somehow she always seemed to know the day before I was coming home from college, and we would spend all of our time together. She was always happy living with my parents but her ears would stand up a bit straighter and her eyes would always sparkle a bit more whenever I was home.

Tootsie's had a couple of rough patches in the last few years and about three months ago she needed to start taking medicine for incontinence. Three weeks ago she stopped eating. The vets were unable to diagnose anything physically wrong with her and eventually they recommended that my parents try pepto-bismol. It seemed to be working and she started eating again but then a few days ago she began to degenerate even more and we all decided that it was time to end it before she truly began to suffer. As I write this my parents are taking her to the vet's to be put to sleep.

They just called to tell me that Tootsie went calmly and happily. She had to watch Chance, our other childhood dog, become incontinent, blind and senile and she seemed to be happy that she had had a wonderful 13 years with us and that we listened to her and didn't force her to continue on after life had become a burden.

RIP Tootsie, you will always be loved and missed.

So sorry to hear of your loss. She looks like a wonderful dog and it sounds like she had a really great life with you. It's always sad in the end, but kinder not to let her suffer - at least she went in peace and with dignity. RIP Tootsie.

Beautiful. I love Enchanted Rock... such an amazing place. When I was there I had the strongest sensation of déjà vu I've ever yet experienced - it is truly a magical location. I'm sure Tootsie had a great time there... my family's golden retrievers (who have also since passed on) loved to visit Enchanted Rock. :)

What a nice story how you got Tootsie she must have been so happy to live with you instead of on the streets. And what a lovely face and expression she has. You must be missing her very much, she looks like such a sweet girl. :(

Thank you everyone. This is being difficult, but Kira, Rhea, Sophie and lots of cherry pie are helping to ease the pain. I'm so glad that she had a good life and didn't have to suffer in the end.

Another picture. This one actually on Enchanted Rock. I miss that place so much. I try to make it back there at least once every time I go home.
