Hawthorne's "Yellowstone" litter

Post by Hawthorne » Sat Jan 14, 2012 12:48 am

Freyja and Dylan had puppies 11 January 2012. There are nine pups: 4 boys and 5 girls. Everyone is healthy and happy--Freyja is doing great.

We have posted quite a bit on Facebook: just search for us: "Hawthorne Tamaskan"

However, I want to post here as well--as this is our first home.

Here are the puppies names:

Female; Dunraven Peak; orange
Female; Black Dragon's Cauldron; yellow
Female; Blacktail Plateau; red
Male; Beartooth Pass; green
Female; Little America; metallic blue
Male; Mammoth Hot Springs; black
Female; Thistle Creek ; white
Male; Hellroaring Canyon; silver
Male; The Thunderer; grey

These are all placenames in Yellowstone National Park--location of the first wolf reintroduction here in the US. These places are all very special to Ben and I--as we spent a lot of time there filming wildlife. I have loads of stories for each spot... :D

I'll post photos soon...

Name-wise, I really like Thistle Creek, Hellroaring Canyon and Blacktail Plateau. However, Black Dragon's Cauldron is by far my favorite - in both name and puppy. ;)

Yes, certainly already we are seeing little characters. Orange loves to go for hikes around mama already. She is also the most vocal  But yes, Ben and I take turns being in the whelping room with mama and pups. Absolutely amazing and so beautiful. I <3 Tamaskan Dogs!

Thanks. Embarrisningly enough, we've had that litter theme picked out since Freyja came home almost three years ago  We love picking out names.

Thanks Julie.

Now I have a question for everyone. I guess I haven't paid much attention to puppy pics at birth and comparing them to adults as far as coloration goes. For the registration paperwork, I'm supposed to know who is a wolf grey and who is a red grey. Are Black Dragon's Cauldron and Hellroaring Canyon red grey? I love the red grey color--so I hope they are :D

I would assume the darker colored pups are red grey...when do you need to submit the registration paperwork? If it can wait a little while, maybe see what colors the pups have a couple weeks down the line...? :?

And yes, more pics pls! <3

I wanted to submit right away as I am DM testing all of the females. I need registration numbers to submit the kits.

A simple solution would be to register the pups without their colors listed (for now)... that way they will have TDR registration numbers so they can be DM tested and then, in a couple of weeks, you can provide Jennie with the info about their colors to go on their registration documents before they are printed and sent to you. You don't need the actual registration documents just yet, just their registration numbers for now so that is very simple to arrange. :)

Thanks Debby! That's a big help, and makes sense. I ordered the tests from OFA last week--when we finally knew how many girls we have. I'm doing this because we are keeping a girl--and with the opportunity to pick a clear female I thought we'd try it and see. However, we already have our eye on one in particular--so we'll cross our fingers.

For others here: Freyja is clear for DM (NN), and the sire, Dylan is a carrier (Nn). All pups will be healthy--nothing wrong with them at all. If you would like more of an explanation, please email or PM me or check out the forum section on DM.

I am not against using carriers--it's just that there are so few options here in the US for breeding that it makes sense to have a clear girl. Also, we wouldn't have to be concerned about importing a boy in the future. It's all about planning and scheming....

There are lots more things to take into account and colour should be the last  I dont look at my pups until they are about 5 to 6 weeks of age
and then I scrutinize them ;)

Things to check for. Tail carriage, head shape and ear size. Make sure
they have a good bite... i.e. scissor. Also check for hind dew claws right after
they are born and make sure they are removed at 3 days old. Also when they are moving freely check out the ones with the best free flowing straight movement with low tail carriage if possible. IF you have a fabulous puppy in all ways other than tail 'dont' discount that puppy just try to choose as
straight a tail as possible for breeding homes. i.e. My Bodie is a fabulous specimen. Tall, graceful, lovely head, yellow eyes (which I love) small ears, fabulous temperament and so on BUT bad tail. He has such a lot to offer
that I will use him on straight tailed girls and hope for the best ;)

And I can't wait to see their puppy ranking develop too! The names are such excellent choices and the puppycam is so cool! Our daughter loves watching it. Congratulations to you and the new family members.
