Western USA lawmakers to cull wolves?

Post by Emielle » Sun Oct 03, 2010 10:46 pm

All I can say is that wolves are natural predators, and they'll go for the easy meals if they're available. They DO need fed just like us. Protect the herds better if they're being so badly affected, don't mess up the ecosystem.

Opinions?

^^I agree. The sad fact is that many wolves are killed so that deer / elk / moose / etc herds can thrive in abundance, to give the trophy hunters something to shoot. :(

And because there's so many deer/elk/moose it affects the balance of everything else, with them eating huge amounts of vegetation. I'm against them killing wolves too, because most people don't realise that they play a part in the way the country works ecologically. :(

Also, it's not much of a trophy considering how many chances you have! With all those animals running around you're bound to hit one. :P

I do think its wrong to cull wolves or any animal for that matter just to protect the population of Deer to encourage hunter/tourism.
Perhaps if they kept the Wolves and provided a haven for them they would encourage wolf lover/tourism....
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
.............................................................
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Sounds like they just want another species to hunt, another trophy to add to the list.

There must be ways for the farmers to protect their herds, large dogs that can fight wolves might help, the wolves would soon learn that domesticated animals were not easy targets and avoid them. As for wild animals the wolves will catch the weak ones that need removing, unlike human hunters that go for the biggest one they can see.

Hunting should only be for food anything else upsets the balance of nature.

I think it's a stupid senseless waste. What the heck is the point of protecting and helping an endangered species grow only to make it endangered once more by killing them when they get out of what the people consider their control. Frankly it's a complete contradiction and completely stupid. :( I'm not just saying that becuase it's wolves either it's what they do when any species proves an inconvenience to someone's lively hood. It's just well stupid lol.

This sadly is really the reason. The US government takes the righteous high ground and says that they are doing it to protect the ranchers but more than that is hunting tourism to Yellowstone and the larger nature preserves. Some of the ranchers even I think secretly promote wolf hunts during these cullings.

Now.......... Coyotes are in much the same boat. Living in rural Alabama, I don't care how well you try to protect small livestock like chickens, goats, ect. Coyotes are all over the place here and those animals are like mice. They can get into any place they want. Many folks around here use large breed dogs to keep them honest but they still find an inroad to the easy food.

That is good news... lets hope it lasts!
Seems like the wolves are forever being put back on the list and then taken off again, endless cycle. *sigh*

Case in point: when wolves disappeared in Yellowstone, so did most of the beavers. When wolves were reintroduced, the beaver population came back. When there were no wolves in Yellowstone, the elk were allowed greater freedom to graze, which stripped the land of a lot of the foliage that beavers use to make their dams. Now that the wolves are back, the beaver colonies are returning. (news article)

Needless to say, adding or subtracting even a single species from an ecosystem has both direct and indirect consequences that we may not even know about. It's sad that we had to learn just how sensitive nature is by eradicating wolves in the first place.

Even without federal protection, however, some organizations (like the International Wolf Center in Minnesota) doubt that the wolves will ever truly die out again in the lower 48 states. (read here). They bring up the point that the public is too invested in the return of the wolf to allow their extinction :) I know I'd fight tooth and nail to keep them around. Still, it can't hurt to keep the wolves on the endangered species list.

Predator Friendly Wool:
http://www.lambandwool.com/pf-cert.htm

A co-op of western farmers who promise not to practice lethal methods of predator control. They use guard animals like llamas and donkeys--and they work!!!

I lived in Montana for a while and participated in the public comment periods held for the Environmental Impact Statement on wolves. I'll tell you: it's black and white out there...people either love or hate wolves.

And ranchers have a saying: shoot, shovel and shut up.

I don't have a background in wildlife management, but in biology. I'll never understand predator control.

Yellowstone was also seeing an increase in the pronghorn population--attributed to the reduction of elk.
