ANCD Tali

Post by Lyss » Sun Jun 05, 2011 10:21 pm

Tali is an Alaskan Noble Companion Dog, born March 12th, 2011.
She's a big sweetheart and softy, and loves to cuddle. I don't think I've met another puppy that loves to cuddle as much as she does.

She's also a breeze to train, so far. We're taking some private puppy classes as well as a few other public puppy classes for things like nosework and socialization. She's learning some focus (watch me) exercises, some mat-work exercises, her kennel command, sit command, to come when I say her name; and she already knows "kisses" (she learned to kiss people instead of bite). I'm looking forward to getting her CGC and then working up from there with other training. She loves other dogs, and has great doggy skills :D The only thing I really worry about with her is that she's pretty shy around people, so that's something I'm really focusing on now as far as training and gentle desensitization. But she's coming around :)

And here are some pics of Tali from 8 weeks to 12 weeks:

Super cute! :D

Have her ears started to rise yet? I guess if she's 12 weeks old and they are still floppy, they will probably stay that way...
she looks very sweet though, very lab-like (a lot like her older companion):

Thanks you guys, I'll get more pics posted soon.
I'm hoping they stand. Both her parents have longer ears, but they stick up. They've gotten a lot stronger since she first got here, and occasionally they will stick up. They're acting a lot like GSD ears - flopping over on themselves, or standing every once in a while and then going soft again - so I'll give them a while longer yet. I don't think I'll worry too much about her ears until after she finishes teething. ;)

Glad to hear she's improving... is it common for ANCD puppies to exhibit shyness towards people?
Did the breeder spend time socializing her with strangers or are they just naturally shy?
Seems strange from the list of breeds that make up the ANCD as they are all very outgoing dogs but perhaps her parents were shy individuals? Could you share some pics of her parents / grandparents / great-grandparents? :)

Ann lives alone. So puppies only ever see her until they go to their new homes. They interact with other dogs with her but not people. Rook is also a bit shy, but the other pups didn't seem to be so much. Not sure about Lyss's pups litter. Rook is slowly improving with the busy life we lead. However, I anticipate this will greatly increase once he has all his shots and we can go to dog parks.

Oh, I didn't realize... so she lives somewhere really remote where people can't visit her?
I had people visiting my pups almost every day since they were born... I think it's pretty important socialization and, of course, potential new owners wanted to meet their pups (and the parents) and see their living conditions - that's pretty important too. Has anyone been to visit her property?

Glad to hear it. It's definitely a good idea to invite people over to meet and play with the pup... the more interaction the better! At 8-10 weeks old they should be super curious about everything and climbing all over people, nibbling ears and whatnot... little rascals. :)

Thats very sad, we lived very remote in Finland, we were 20mins from the nearest village that only had a small supermarket, a couple of shop and a garage, we NEVER got visitors because we didnt really know anyone in Finland..... but all our pups were still very outgoing and social when new owners came to view them. Perhaps it is something inherited, id be interested to know what breeds are directly behind these pups

I do believe their shyness is a learned trait due to lack of early socialization as he is improving with the heavy socialization he gets now. Juneau was the same way as a pup with certain people types and almost all dogs, yet now any stranger and any child can come up and hang all over him. Juneau gets along with pretty much any dog as long as they like to wrestle Tamaskan style! Lucky for me Rook loves to wrestle and is as vocal as Juneau when doing so! He also has a very loving temperment towards Juneau when he seizes. I may have myself a seizure alert dog!

I am not too surprized that Juneau was shy as a pup as he is from a puppy mill and so cant really reflect the true temprement of the breed as a young pup, however you could be right that it is lack of early socialization, only by finding other ANCD owners and asking about their pups woudl you find out, even with lack of early socialization if they are brought up in a calm and careful way the majority of the litter should still be outgoing, or did she have the pups born outside in a kennel?

Sorry all, I've been busy these past few weeks.

Here are some updated pictures. Tali's ears came up last week! Whoo!
Wow, Tricia, Rook is looking handsome, by the way, in your avatar :D

I need to get a new camera. The only pics I can take are when it's plugged in :? sorry guys, I promise I'll post some photos of our other adventures soon as I can!

On to the Q&As:

Yes, Ann lives alone and the pups interacted mostly with other dogs. As such, Tali has incredibly dog-to-dog communication skills. I've never had to worry about her when meeting/in proximity with another friendly dog. As for people, she's coming around. We've had some major breakthroughs, so I'm wondering if this is only a "fear period." If so, I'm anticipating another phase in a month or two.

Her litter was more outgoing. I got Tali because she had a softer temperament which fits in better with my family ;) Fortunately, her shyness hasn't been a terrible thing to overcome so far.

I'll see about sharing pics of her lineage with you all. In the meantime, here is a public video of her grandmother:

Here is a public picture of her grandfather (who I'm sure some of you recognize):

Image

I believe the pups were born inside. I have it in an email somewhere, I just need to dig it up. But no, I don't believe they were born outside in a kennel ;)

You are correct Lyss... all Ann's pups are born / live inside and are handled by her from day one.

I love Tali's eyes! She is getting big. Rook messured in at 35 lbs today and 20" or so tall. What does your girl weigh now? He did great with the vet! A little cautious of her at the beginning, but was quickly giving kisses.

Two more pics (my favorites) this past week. lol.

here, she cunningly uses her cuteness to butter me up for the mischief to come:

Image

and here, she beams at me: "look mom! mud!"
there were little muddy pawprints all throughout the house before I could stop her and snap a photo.
but it was too cute! she handled the bath afterwards like a champ! all she wanted to do was play with the water lol.

Image

I'm not sure how much she weighs, though I'm taking her in later today to find out. I'll edit this with the results later tonight or tomorrow. She is about 17" tall now, though. A few more weeks and she'll be as tall as our lab!

edit: sorry this is so late. she's 34lbs last we measured (this past weekend). she's gonna be a big girl!
