My Catahoula Rhodin

Post by Gaby » Thu Jan 13, 2011 11:27 pm

This is Rhodin, my two years old Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog. We've been to a little island before the shore of Holland, called Schiermonnikoog and took some beautiful pictures wich I wanted to share. ;)

Great pics x
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
.............................................................
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Haha, that's how we like them too. We went on a Wednesday and it rained sometimes. So there were no people at all. And that is great if you ask me. ;) There are a few little islands before the shore of Holland, in the north. There are no cars allowed and it's not very populair to go there in the fall and winter. In the summer it is crowded. More reason for us to go again soon. ;)

I'm wondering if Rhodin isn't a blue merle and both his parents are too?
I might just be mixing breeds together.. but if so, isn't a merle x merle pairing a no go?

If i'm not mistaken Rhodin is a double merle (both parents being merle) and that would explain why he is so much whiter. He is one-sided deaf so that wasn't a good pairing indeed.

Yes, he is a double merle. I should have never taken him home, but I did. :( Merle x merle is a no go, but because all the Catahoula's are bred merle x merle I never noticed that it was a problem or looked further, because I never knew that something like a colour could cause so much problems. The breeds I was familiar with didn't have the merle gene. The breeder never told us. He said that he was deaf because he was so white. And that he was the only one, an exception. Not that it was a risk he took while he knew merle x merle was a no go. When I got him, I searched for brothers and sisters and I found out that there where more deaf siblings. If I knew it before, I would not have took the dog home. A few responsible Catahoula breeders start breeding merle x solid and I'm very glad with that, but most pairs are stil merle x merle and the white puppies are being killed after they are born. There are Catahoula breeders who even say that the merle x merle is a no go doesn't count for the Catahoula. :| After we had our dog, we heared that the breeder wanted to kill him, but his wife saw the pups before the breeder did and she didn't want him to kill the puppies. So he didn't and that's why our dog is still alive. I was really angry about him not telling the truth and the breeder told us we could give the dog back. But I didn't want to, who knows what would happen to him with such a man and I love my dog to death. ;)

Yes, he is white because he is a double merle, but all the other pups have different colours too. There are very dark pups, one coloured pups with tan and pups who are almost totally white. Catahoula's come in every colour a dog could have.

OMG that is horrible... especially because the breeder should have known better! Why should the puppies be punished for his mistakes? It's really good that you came along and took him home, even if he isn't "perfect" - you soon learn that NO dogs are "perfect"... until you let them into your heart, and then you don't care about any little "flaws"... they are perfect in YOUR eyes and that's the important thing! :)

Shelties, Aussies, Borders.. all the same.. merle should always be bred to a non merle - to prevent deafness and blindness that can follow with the ones with a double portion of the merle gene..

Even though I've heard some speaking of chihuahua's merling being different and should be avoided all together - though I really doubt it should be something special for that breed compared to all others (that I know of)

Yes, it counts for all the breeds who have the merle gene. And you can't always see that the dog is merle but it can still carry the merlegene, it's called phantom merle in Catahoula's (http://www.donabney.com/issue_merle.php). So it's better to test your dog if you want to breed with it and that's possible nowadays, especially with the Catahoula because they are in so many colours and patterns. The most Catahoula breeders kill the puppies who are mostly white to prevent deafness and blindness, that's why the breeder wanted to kill my dog and his white brothers and sisters, what his wife prevented.

I do really like the merle coloring but it's a tricky one to work with due to the health risks.
It is very similar to the problems associated with breeding 2 Overo horses, which can result in the "lethal white syndrome":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lethal_white_syndrome

Dilute colors can also have side effects, as we were discussing here on the forum:

Rhodin has the best of both worlds, haha. But I know what you mean. Many people think he looks scary because of his light eyes and he is a dog who is always watching and observing in an almost human manner.

He is not growling or barking, but chewing on a little stick. Lol
