Rahne, as I said on FB, he is one handsome boy. I also asked how this happened and if there was the possibility of a white litter, assuming a match could be found similar to Winter's parentage for breeding, and assuming you plan on breeding him. I believe someone answered that anymore white like Winter would be unlikely. Why? What would it take, genetically, to have littlers of white Tams? Just curious.

Genetically the 'white' is dilution of red (phaeomelanin) pigment, the genes that causes this is (believed) to be located on the C locus. Normal (not diluted) pigment is dominant over diluted pigment which means the 'white' is recessive and both parents need to carry the genes for it. I will keep it simple to explain but theoretically this is not 100% correct since you have several different markers that can cause dilution..

C = dominant 'white' gene
c = recessive 'white' gene

Every dog has 2 genes (one pair), one inherited from the mother and the other inherited from the father.
A dog that is:

CC = both dominant 'white' genes so dog isn't white and can only pass one the dominant gene to its offspring.
Cc = one dominant 'white' gene and one recessive 'white' gene. Dog isn't white but does carry it so could pass it on to offspring.
cc = both recessive 'white' genes so dog is white and can only pass one the recessive gene to its offspring.

Winter is cc because he is white. His parents are not white but they have passed on the genes for it so they are both carriers = Cc.
The color comes from Winter his grandfather, Whitefang, who was a white. He produced 3 dogs that were/are used for breeding: Heidi, Summer and Skye. They are all carriers since they have gotten Whitefang his recessive gene. Winter his father Bodie is also a carrier and he got the gene from his mother Jodie who is a full sister to Whitefang. So currently there are 5 known 'white' carriers: Heidi, Summer, Skye, Jodie and Bodie. They could pass on the gene to their offspring so all of their descendants could be carriers but you never know for certain unless you would DNA test them (don't think that is possible yet for this gene) or they produce white offspring themselves.

I don't know if the 'white' is carried in any other bloodline. If you breed any of those 5 dogs together that are known carriers then every pup from the litter has 25% chance of being a white. I don't think it's unlikely there will be more whites in the future. If any descendants of Heidi, Summer, Skye and Jodie are bred together there is a chance of more whites and if it is carried in other bloodlines aswell then the chance becomes bigger.

Table
white.jpg
If you want a whole litter of whites then you would need to mate two whites together. If Winter is bred to a colored ('white' carrier) female then all pups would have 50% chance of being white and if he is bred to a colored (non-carrier) female then the whole litter will be colored ('white' carriers).

Hope this makes sense :mrgreen:

Wow, I LOVE his expression. Beautiful eyes too. Most of the times, puppies in this age aren't at their best because they are so out of proportion. :lol: But you can already see that he is very well build and he will be stunning when he is older. I'm very, very, curious how he will look when he is fully grown. I'll bet you he will be an eye-catcher, because he is that now already!! :D

He is looking good and I can see his mum Heidi in the head study photo of him. Still got his lovely yellow eyes. :D His ears are
growing faster than his head at the moment but they should end up a lot smaller like his sire and dams when adult.

I can't measure Winter, he doesn't stand still :lol:
He doesn't look very big, as he doesn't have much 'body', and overall still looks very much like a puppy. If he is standing straight, right next to Konah, he is almost as tall as her so my estimate... about 64/65cm shoulderheight.

He's a sweet boy, though still doesn't enjoy being petted by strangers. With other dogs he seems calmer then before but still get his hackles up and occasionally he will bark or growl at the other dog. If he spots a dog while he is offleash he will run straight to it with hackles raised, after he sniffed the dog then it's ok and he calms down. Today he and Konah have played with an 11 month old Amstaff male and that went fine.

Ahhh, he is still a beauty! It's ok if you give him as a gift to me?! :lol: :lol:
If his health tests are ok would you use him as a studdog? His puppies could be awesome - as I love the arctic wolf look.
You must feel very lucky with two so damn beautiful dogs.

Update on Winter:

He's doing great, made a lot of progress! Sadly he's been attacked by several intact males these past few weeks, though he wasn't hurt it's a step back again dealing with other dogs :(

He's stunning! So sorry to hear about him being attacked. That happened to Yarrow the other week, as well, and I was so upset :( He wasn't hurt either, but I'm so concerned it will have an emotional effect on him. It's a big reason I would consider neutering Yarrow. Intact males always seem to get picked on!

he has some crazy long legs! Sorry he has had some problems with intact males. Dylan had the same issue when he was an adolescent and it made him nervouse around other dogs. I hope you are able to work through it quickly!!
