Darwin (J&J's Devil of Piru)

Post by Hawthorne » Mon Apr 04, 2011 10:53 pm

Hello,
We just picked up a 5 month old Tamaskan Dog from New York state yesterday. He is 50 pounds and is wolf-gray. So incredibly sweet. The previous owner worked 5-6 days a week 8-10 hours a day and simply couldn't take care of him any more. He had a vet visit today and we had him start his Lyme Disease vaccination schedule over as it had lapsed, began the vaccination schedule for Corona, had him tested for Giardia (clear!), microchipped him and had an over all health check. He's in good shape and will return to the vet in 3 weeks for his next Lyme shot. We've inquired about obedience for him but the next class may not start until June--so we may look elsewhere. Also, I still have to track down an answer regarding a dog license for him. As you all may know we will be moving as soon as we sell our house. I just want to know if the lifetime license is transferrable. If not, we'll just get the one good for a year.
It was a 14 hour round trip and we made it an over-nighter so that we could get the new pup home in time to walk him with our other two dogs. The introduction went brilliantly. I don't subscribe to 100% of what Ceaser Millan does--but this method worked. Of course it was pouring down rain so 20 minutes was sort of our limit (even though I wanted to go for at least an hour).
Just like other young Tamskans, he got car sick a couple of times but then was fine for the rest of the drive--slept most of the way. He ate as soon as he got home--so no trouble there. His stool is still soft but I suspect that'll clear up in a few days--probably just nerves.

Here are some photos of "Darwin" : http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2 ... 98c26e3b15

Okay--more to come but for now a nap--I'm exhausted!!!

beautifull ;)
I like it when they got this little fold between the ears, like Wave, Maskann, Jack and some pups of the year ;)

So cute! There was another Tam in NY? I guess Frøya is the only Tamaskan New Yorker now.

Congratulations! What a pretty boy, nice for the other dogs to have another friend to play with. :) Also very nice for Darwin, to not be alone anymore. ;)

There are 2 other NY pups
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
.............................................................
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Thanks, everyone! This wasn't the way we expected to add another Tam to our lives--but we are very happy!

On top of all the other vet stuff, Darwin's fecal came back negative...no parasites for our boy! Yay!

He does, however, have some behavioral problems. He seems to have some degree of separation anxiety--really panics when we put him in his crate to leave to run errands or work. Also, he INHALES his food. We will work with him on this--our other two dogs are very well adjusted, so I help this may rub off on him somehow.

I think maybe we need to start all over with the crate training. Put him in his crate and sit there with him, wait for him to calm down, then open the door. Put him in his crate, walk out of sight for 30 seconds, come back, wait for him to calm down, open the crate. Keep adding time... repeat.

For the food inhalation, the previous owner gave us one of those large balls that goes in the food dish. This does slow him down, but does anyone have other suggestions for either of his issues? We prefer positive reinforcement type training. Neither Fenris nor Freyja eats fast and they even eat out of their own bowls--and sometimes only munch on it throughout the day.

Darwin's very smart--learned his name in one day! Livin' up to his name already...

Thanks!

One way I have heard about slowing down the eating is to get a pan (cookie sheet?) and spread the food on that so he is not gulping down mouth fulls.

I would consider spreading the food on a larger area - Sølve ate fast when i first got her but not anymore

Darwin is doing much better in the car now. No more puking! No more drooling!
He rides in the car with Ben to and from work every day. Yay!
Here's a photo of him snug in the back seat during one of our cross-state commutes.

I've been using photoshop for well over 15 years, but work was nice enough to send me to a CS6 Intermediate class. Here's what I did in class (LOL!)

Last weekend we had the pleasure of meeting up with a local mushing group: Team Balto. I've been searching for help in this realm for a while now but finally met a bunch of very friendly people on FB. They set a time and we showed up with two of our Tamaskan, one harness and that's it! They let us borrow a harness and a couple of different sleds to try things out. The one sled is far too small for our dogs but it worked just fine for training. Both Ben and I were able to drive the team. One of our new friends hooked their dog up in lead to help our dogs learn faster. It was a blast and the dogs had a great time too! Once things "clicked" they pulled like mad.
The photos are of Darwin and Freyja. We hope to get Raven out for the next outing--we just can't handle more than two dogs and our little pink puppy at the same time
