Carsickness

Thought this would be a good poll to get an idea of how many Tamaskans do and don't get carsick. You can revote in case they no longer are carsick or maybe suddenly become carsick. Hopefully if I did this correctly, you should be able to vote more than once for those with multiple Tamaskans

I voted yes for balto because Lynn said he gets all drooly in the car, but that both he and rook have gotten better. I don't think they have car-o-phobia, but they are still small so have to be picked up and put in anyway.

Although it has gotten a lot LOT better and she almost doesn't drool anymore she still doesn't want to go into the car (at least not the first couple of times we go in and out, when we are out and have been going into the car it is much easier than back home

Jack GOT carsick. It takes a long time that he is not carsick anymore. But I said "yes" because he was it.
I am sure that all your dogs will be carsick-free later when you take them as often with you as you can!!

Shay had terrible car sickness but since I made her a Thunder-shirt, she has been a lot better. I have even managed to convince her to jump into the car herself. Before, she would'nt even walk past my car, let alone get in it, without a strugle. The constant drooling has got a lot better and I think having Tala in the boot with her, has helped as well.

lexi used to get sick and hate the car. she now loves it you only have to say do you want to go in the car and she gets very excited and takes herself to the car and jumps in. she can now go about 30 miles without any drooling. i think they grow out of it as they get older.

I would say that about a quarter of my dogs get car sick but I have noticed that when I first set off to go camping with them some
are quite sick and drooly in the beginning but as the journey progresses they all stop. By the end of the day they are fine and for
the rest of the days I am away. This is really strange as its just the first couple of hours and then it settles. I would definately
suggest that you keep taking them in the car as much as you can even though it may mean stopping every now and again and cleaning up

Sturgeon sickness tablets for humans purchased from a Chemist help. Also as has been suggested before feed them in the car while it is on your drive, leave them with the engine off in the car for around 10 mins every now and then. You can then progress
to leaving the engine running and finally do a little drive around the block and back. Always try to end your journey with something
pleasant like a nice walk or titbits etc.

At this time I do not own a dog. But I do know that there are more dogs, from every breed that get carsick. There are also people that say that it has to do with a sort of elektric charge when the car is moving and that it helps to have a sort of strip that is going to the ground so that charge will leave the car and than the dogs don't feel so bad.

Most of my dogs started off car sick as youngsters but all outgrew it. The worst lasted for 3months coming out of both ends but I continued taking him to dog club every week (30mins away) and although I had to take a bucket of water, sponge and towel eventually I could take him anywhere in the car.
As I tell all my puppy purchasers the dogs first experiance in the car makes a difference. If you pick your pup up from breeder and throw it in a crate in the boot to scream all the way home then that dog is going to hate the car. (If the breeder has already done it to take multiple pups to the vets it maybe too late).
If you sit the dog on your knee with a towel and cuddle it then it may drool but I bet you £10 that its car sickness will clear up quick than the crated dogs would.

Mila did get carsick, the first few months. She was puking and drooling. We had to put her on the leash before we get back to the car, if she spotted the car before that, she wouldn't come. She still doesn't like it very much, but isn't carsick any more. I think she was around five or six months old when the drooling stopped.

I totaly agree with both Lynn and Jenny with this. When we collected Shay (Tracy and I ) she was sick and poo'd by the time we got to the end of their drive !! Tracy took shay out for a wee wonder while I cleaned up. What was a 6 hour drive down, was a 10 hour drive back. We stopped every hour or so and took her out for some fresh air and a drink of water. Shay was great in herself, not stressed or screamming and we decided supermarket car parks were a great place to stop as LOAD'S of people were comming over to us. Shay was loving the attention... but as soon as the car started moving again she would be wretching again. She was still wagging her tail though.
I don't think it was the seperation from the litter so much as the noise, vibration and possibly the smell of the car, that was making her sick. She then "Learned" not to like the car as she associated it with being sick even though I did a lot of training with her and ALWAYs ended with a fun experiance or a treat (usually a carrot as she is mad for them) She is quiet, non-distructive and extreamly well behaved in the car.... It is simply the actual movement that set's her off.

Mila is a classic case of a crate dog. She was stuck in a crate while travelling over to Europe with me. Travelling with other pups also doesn't always help as they stress each other out.

Konah used to be carsick although the throwing up stopped when she was around 4 months of age. She did still drool a lot (the whole car and herself would be soaking wet), until she was around 1 year old. Now she still get stressed (she will keep her tail under her belly) and she sometimes drools a bit but it has gotten a lot better then before.

Winter is carsick too, poor boy. He now hates cars and tries to pull the leash even when we just walk on the streets and pass by other cars. I have good hope that in time he will improve like Konah.

So that started because of the crate? Didn't know that. The first drive when we took her home she was on my friends lap on a towel. Than she wasn't sick at all and was sleeping the whole time, fortunately.

Now she is well behaved in the car, she is always on the back seat, never been in a crate any more after we picked her up.

It is only my opinion of course, but I always encourage new owners to sit pups on their knee (which obviously I cant do when driving several pups over to Europe at the same time) but I wouldnt encourage people to fly their dogs instead as it would make no difference, they still go in the car in a crate to the airport and get on the plane in a crate and then get taken off the plane by a truck and driven around still in their crate etc etc

Nova was car-sick first month or two ...but voted no because she is two now and have never been sick since then, and despite drooling, never any car-phobia.

Cindy used to be terribly car sick (vomit) but now she just lies down & drools (still a sign of car-sickness).
Some days worse than others - sometimes she soaks the towel and car seat, other times it is merely damp.

She used to hate the sight of the car and I had to lift her in to it but now she happily gets in (thanks to the weekly/twice weekly hydrotherapy trips).

I voted No. Mona Lisa has done really well with car rides since day one

She did develop a fear of the car after our long drive across country but she has long gotten over her fear as she now happily jumps into the truck

Jasper used to get quite carsick (drooling) until 9 months old.
Vixen used to get slightly carsick (light drool) but not much any more.
Zora gets very carsick (lots of drool) but it is getting a bit better.
Vala isn't drooling at all and just seems to sleep when she is in the car.

As long as none of the dogs are fed before a car journey, I never worry about them vomiting in the car.
Feeding them within a couple of hours of driving is just asking for trouble.

Freyja got carsick as a pup. It was worse when she was in the car alone. She's now fine in the car.
Darwin was initially car sick when we took him home at 5 months old. It cleared up quickly but we recently took him for a ride by himself--something we hadn't done in a long time. All the ups and downs of the mountain road made him throw up.

Raven seems to have nerves of steel. I think she's only gotten car sick once or twice and we take her places several times a week.

Tika drools heavily every time we drive anywhere. If the ride is longer than 5-10 minutes she usually throws up. We take trips regularly, usually to a puppy class or the dog park so it's not like she's going somewhere unpleasant. It doesn't really help if our Lab is in the car and he loves car rides. I'm hoping she will grow out of it, we are still working on making it a pleasant experience though.

I would have to qualify my response (No) with the fact that we take our girls in the car ALL the time and they are quite used to it. When they first arrived both Rhea and Sophie got very carsick. It took two weeks of five minute car trips around the block, and constantly using the car to take them fun places (like the dog park, or for a walk in town) to get them where they are now. Quite happily, "now" is totally cool with being in the car. They both ride quietly in the back and have no anxiety about getting in the car.

For those of you with puppies learning how to ride in cars, stick with it! The carsickness should abate after a while.

Finally found a food stuff that will tempt Sam into the car (hesitant but still) voluntarily, a huge leap into the back... Ice-cream! Not good for traveling but it has given me a huge boost of hope for outside the home... It sounds silly but it brought tears (of relief i think) to the eye

Zephyr loves icecream too... He would do anything for it. I found doggy icecream and I give him a small bowl of it before I leave if I am going to be gone for a few hours. Keep working with him

It was kinda a shock, i never expected ice-cream to work since steak, liver, chicken, lamb, other various meats raw and cooked, fav dog treats didn't work... But yeah, pretty pleased

Ice cream seems to be able to get most kids to do anything too. Guess it's not too surprising it works on Tams as well.

he can't be lifted anymore and when he could be lifted we just sat there eating sweeties (treats but he wasn't interested in the slightest), chunks of steak won't tempt him, we have been walking past it 3 times + a day every since 12 weeks old and he still puts up a fight walking past it, i've sat the cat in the car to show him nothing happens, i've contacted dog trainers but i need to get him there in the car, i've contacted call out trainers and they suggested everything i've already tried, i've tried a different car to see if it was the car he didn't like, we haven't used it for a while to see if he would forget the last time he went in it (that and i can't physically get him in it any more), tried back seat and front seat just incase it was a boot of car issue, fav toys and blankets in first and still nothing...

so i was wondering if the fantastic brains of the people hear could think of something i missed...

I used Adaptil from vets he goes in fine but still drools

Ok, i don't want to celebrate too soon but.... We went to the seaside today and there was no ice-cream in sight (parked a fair distance away) so i had nothing but a smoked fish (Sam didn't know about the fish nor does he like it)...

I told him to sit and wait to make sure it was all clear because the getting in process usually involves some tugging and pulling which, in a busy car park is non too good, but he pushed past me and jumped in the car

all by him self

no prompts or "sam, in the car!" 's

Just did it!

So pleased with my doggie!!!

Trying not to get too excited just in case it was a 1 off but i can't help it... He's just changed so much in a week

For about 3 day trips, Sam has been getting in the car of his own accord! No ice-cream! Yay! Some days he has had to get in up to 5 times and he has jumped in with only a bit of hesitation

. I can see he still doesn't like it but his tolerance of it has progressed immensely i only a few weeks...

I've had an idea of something to tackle his SA, i just hope my neighbor can put up with it

Anyhow, for those who are not on fb, hear is my Sammy in the car! Laid down! He could, if he wanted, jump out, there are no restrictions... but he does not for a whole minute

I'm not sure it would work for Lexi unless she really likes ice cream lol, But ice-cream in his kong (he is an ice cream fiend

The only thing he snatches from passing kids if i don't watch

) ... First off without medication (preferable for me, i want to solve the issue not use a ... band aid for lack of better word), but if he still isn't calm enough to eat his ice cream, i may need calming aids. I've spent time googling things after you told me what you use for lexi....

So far he hasn't eaten anything i put in his kong while i'm out from peanut butter to frozen meat paste (blended raw/cooked meat)...
The same for the car, nothing could get him in from cooked/raw meat to treats... It only happened by accident, i was sat eating an ice-cream on the edge of the car boot and he hopped in hoping for ice cream so he got it...

The past few weeks i got him in the car using ice cream and going for hour car rides in stead of having him lifted in struggling and driving for 20 mins...
So i'm hoping that the same effect will happen when i leave him with an ice cream stuffed kong... Leave him with ice cream and go out for an hour because i think he associates the car with ice cream and i'm hoping he will think the same with being alone. But my neighbor is pissed off with me going to take the kids to school for 20 mins, i'm worried an hour or so will be pushing it...

Also with the car, i could monitor his progress and nurture it, but i have no where to leave a web cam where he can't eat it to monitor his SA progress... But i do think i need to start leaving him longer when i leave... Hopefully something will happen pretty quick...

Before i moved my neighbors wasn't bothered and i was leaving him for an hour or so but i never found anything he would eat out of his kong or amuse him self with (except things he chewed that he wasn't supposed to chew)...

I never thought i'd be able to get him in the car... ever... So there is hope...

I give Zephyr and a doggy ice cream cup as I am leaving too distract him, it works pretty good but doesn't last more than 15 minutes.

What's in doggy ice cream?

Maya eats whatever's in her Kong in 5 minutes or less. She's more interested in her Kong Wobbler and the kibble in that lasts about half an hour.

If only she would pace herself!

The doggy ice cream I get is called Frosty Paws, I think it is made by Nestlé
