I weighed Mila today at exactly 10 weeks and she weighs 5,4 kilos. ;) So she is growing good and she is getting long legs!
Tropicalbreeze wrote:Our girl Cassidy is coming up on 11-months and she's a lean - not mean - loving machine. :D

When doing research for "raw" and "barf" diets - found a great article on recipes that mentioned German Shepherds have this lean look for almost two years. (I think Lynne and others have mentioned this too since Tams have that GS component.)

The main point in that article was to not rush to put extra weight on the dog.

They're lean, they're growing and developing - an overreaction to bulk them up would just cause more harm than good. They'll fill out on their own accord.
Mila is getting a raw diet too. She likes it very much, but she's still lean and I like her that way. ;) Do you have that article for me maybe?

Sorry it took some time to find it again...lol... Here's the link to the whole story.
http://www.vonlotta.com/diet.html

Specifically this paragraph:
As a side note, also, most vets usually have only a very general idea about the proper weight of the German Shepherd Dog. They usually don’t have breed specific information and may have limited knowledge of how a German Shepherd puppy develops differently from other breeds of dogs. Most vets, when seeing a German Shepherd puppy in a healthy, fit condition will advise the owner to “put some weight on’em.” Don’t do it! And also don’t follow suggested feeding amounts on your bag of dog food. Most often you have to cut that amount almost in half for your German Shepherd puppy. German Shepherd puppies need to stay very lean while growing. They will grow large, and strong, and fit. If you like a heavier dog, you will always be able to let him "fill in" later, but please do not destroy his growing joints with excess weight during the growth period.
Hope this helps. ;)

Thank you Tropicalbreeze! When I have some more time I will read it. ;) We keep our other dog also lean, but people don't like it very much. He isn't too skinny or something like that, but when my friend was biking with our dog somebody shouted that he should start feeding him! Most dogs I see are a bit too fat, people aren't used to it. The vet likes him though. ;)

Don't worry, I used to get the same comments about Jasper... but the dog's overall health is far more important than other people's (misguided) opinions! A lean dog is a healthy dog and, have you ever seen a chubby wolf? Most are very fit and trim... there is NO place for overweight animals in the wild, it just doesn't happen and, if it did, they wouldn't last long because they wouldn't be able to keep up with the rest of the pack and would make an easy target. Plus, Tamaskan pups stay on the lean side until adulthood, they don't start 'filling out' until at least 2 years old. I think it's much healthier for them anyway; as the article says, chubby puppies have far more strain on their growing joints and bones. ;)

People keep saying that Sølve is too skinny..
They cant really grasp that she 1) is growing 2) is from a lean breed 3) is female which means not as big as a male and 4) she isnt showing ribs - yes you can feel them if you touch her, but they cant be seen..

I hate how people seems to think that Im not feeding her enough.. she really gets all that she can eat :?

Ribs showing aren't the best indicator of condition--the three hip processes are--the bones stick out if the dog is in bad shape. So you can tell others that and show them her hips instead :)

Darwin went to the vet again Wednesday for his booster shot for Lyme and Corona. He weighs 60 pounds!!! That's ten pounds in three weeks.

you cant really count on her hips either, one day they seems to be really showing the next not at all..
But she gets all she wants and grows a whole lot, and Kovo is much more skinny than she has ever been

Dylan (Pigs Might Fly) is one year old tomorrow. He is 28 inches (71.12 cm) and 65 pounds (29.48 kg).

He is tall and lanky. He eats a lot, but he still looks thin. It must be from all that hard work of being a lap dog

We get that comment often (as Eastern coyotes are larger...but still not quite as large as a male Tam--well, mostly).

Pretty sure there is one on the forum..... maybe on her litter page
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Darwin is 75 pounds and 26 inches tall (an inch taller than Freyja now!)
(that's 34.1 kilos and 66cm tall)

He's 8 months old!!!
Any predictions on size? We're guessing in the 90 pound range. He's not chunky right now either. He's quite lean. Freyja was more lean at his age but I figure it's because he's a male. His paws are still huge and he's the biggest klutz--running into everything, falling over when he scratches. Such a cutie!

I may need to go through all of these and make an average growth chart. That would be really neat to have.

Great idea it would be very useful when checking a dogs growth to see if was normal or not. You might need more people to enter their dogs details for a really good graph.
