Fluffy puppies vs smoother coat

Post by Paige » Wed Sep 03, 2014 7:34 pm

I'm looking at photos of Starlight Tamaskan's X-Men litter, and two of the puppies are much fluffier than the others. The rest have pretty smooth looking coats.

Is this fluffiness something that will remain as an adult? Did your puppy look like this, and if so, is their coat a little longer still as an adult? And does anyone have some photos of Tamaskans who were this fluffy as puppies and what they look like now as adults?

I ask because I've always liked the look of Tamaskans who are a tad shaggier than a super smooth coat, and I'm wondering which type of coat I should look for in a puppy for a shaggier looking adult.

These are the two fluff balls:

And these are the smoother coated puppies from the same litter:

the fluff around the ears makes me think they are genetically longcoated, how long their coats will get is not predictable, though I don't think it will be very long

I have jet to see another non longcoated Tam which such a thick and 'shaggy' coat as my boy has and he wasn't very fluffy as a pup

Wylie was moderately fluffy as a pup, but he has a thick, longer coat now :) He's got longer fur than a husky, but not overly long.

If I look to these photos from Blustag of their grand grandmother (Blustag Star Dust) and grand grand grandmother (Sylka), I would say they might look like them as adults...

The longer coat will take more care and maintenance. It is not "to the standard" per se, but if it's what you like than why not? (Unless you intend to breed your pup.)

I don't have any photo examples of what you are asking. All of my pups have been short-coated. But I agree: coats are hard to predict in the breed at this point. Especially color!

Thanks for the photos Tana!

I think I might have phrased it wrong. I think I mean coat density?

Oh! That certainly depends on climate. My dog's coats really thin out in the summer here because temps often get up into the 90s and 100s (ugh!). They looked better when we lived further north. But yes, Freyja's daughter Raven has a much thicker coat than her mom. And Freyja seems to lose more in the summer than Raven. Darwin's coat is somewhere in between that of Freyja's and Raven's for thickness. None of them seemed to get their ear fur until they were 18 months +. Until then they had big pink ears.

Surprisingly, balto has a fairly thick coat (even in an Australian summer). I've often wondered if it is because he carries one copy of the long coat gene. His sister looks like she has a much shorter/smoother coat.
