Burying poop with nose... This is new to me!

So a new addition to Ramsey's ever growing repertoire of funny behaviors.... burying poop with his nose! As far as I know he only buries his own poop. I tried to research on it and, while it is relatively common to bury poop, I can't find many instances of using one's nose to do it. And one person says that it is breed-specific (especially ancient breeds). Is that a common thing for Tamaskans? It's not causing any issue (other than accidentally stepping on Ramsey's hidden "presents"). I am just curious why he does it.

It's generally done if an animal feels like they need to hide their scent. This happened for 2 days when I first brought Wylie home and he met Sam. Wylie was a bit scared of Sam so he buried his own poop. It's not a huge deal unless you feel he's stressed.

New to me as well, not heard of anyone else's Tamaskan do this before so I don't believe this is a breed specific thing.

Yeah, I don't think he's particularly stressed. I think he just started doing it couple weeks ago, and there hasn't been any changes. I managed to catch him in the act.

Sawyer does this using his nose more with his urine , but a few times he tries to do it with his poop too. He eliminates (most of the time) in a small rock/pebble box I set up in the yard. Makes it easy to clean up poop and hopefully the urine won't kill all the grass. So it's even easier for him to move the pebbles around with his nose to cover it up. I haven't correlated it with how smelly the pebble box is...if I don't hose it out often enough...or some other thing makes him want to do it sometimes. I think its funny. I try to stop him if he is leashed mainly because I don't want buried land mines and I don't like him digging around the pebbles with his nose.

Darwin does this ALL THE TIME when we have a litter. Interesting, huh?
Darwin is an in tact male and we have had three litters here over three years. He stops doing it when the puppies are a little older. But every time: like clockwork, he buries his poo when we have puppies in the house. He comes in the house with a dirty nose and I know what he's been up to….silly dog!

Pepper does this with pee. She also does this with other dogs pee when it snows and will cover up the other dog pee with snow using her nose.

She has also done this with puke. She puked then tried to cover it up using her nose. Nice.
