predicting color

Post by Hawthorne » Tue Jun 24, 2014 2:43 pm

I think I made this post in one of the old forums…but this time I have photos to go with it! I hope others can post similar "before" and "after" photos…I think this will be fun!

So, I'm having fun trying to figure out what color pups will be when they become adults. As you can see below, it's not as straightforward as you might think. My favorite example is Max (Hawthorne Hellroaring Canyon from our 2012 Yellowstone litter) --

bark as if no one can hear you
catch the ball on the fly
lick like there's no end to kissing
sleep on a sofa nearby
jump like the sky is the limit
sit by the fire with friends
stay with the ones who love you
run like the road never ends

While maybe Siena was a little bit more predictable? Still very beautiful!

So with our most recent litter, predicting color is even more of a challenge because the litter is an outcross. But what do you think? The pup on the left could turn out like his father--because he is the spitting image of Arrow as a baby. But, he also looks a lot to me like Max--who turned out looking a lot like Freyja's coloration. Then, the pup on the right looks like she could either turn out like Siena or like Freyja. LOL! Silliness!

My Guess:

Left puppy will look like Arrow, middle puppy will look like Jasper, and right puppy will look like Zelda but a bit darker.

Here's Wylie's color change.

The middle puppy could turn out like her aunt Misquah (Points Unknown). LOL (this is crazy!)

Its interesting isn't it? Cato my estrela was really dark as a puppy, with black legs, we thought he'd turn out to be a dark fawn, but if you've ever seen any pics of him, you'll know he isn't.
Likewise, one of his sisters is blue, she had a really striking silver sheen to her coat as a puppy, the only evidence left of the dilution now, apart from pigment, is some grey guard hairs and in her mask.

I think the two on the left will stay wolf grey with middle masks or full masks, probably a good combo of Freyja and Arrow. As for the pup on the far right she already has a minimal mask and very distinct sharp markings so will probably look the most like her husky ancestors on arrows side.
