Puppy colors

Post by Tatzel » Tue Mar 06, 2012 4:46 am

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question but since it concerns puppies (and also breeding?);

I've always wondered how to determine what color/shade a Tamaskan's going to have later, as in the pictures all of the puppies seem to be brown.

For example Summer of Münsterland seems to be brighter than for example Nanuq.

Personally I'd love to have a Tamaskan in traditional wolfgrey, is it possible to tell how the pups are going to 'turn out' later in their life (seasonal coat and shade changes aside)?
I'm just wondering because it seems to me as if a supposely new owner's going to select their puppy rather early when it's hard to tell (for outsiders?) what the final color/shade might look like.

Tamaskan change colors very drastically, here's an example the TDR put out.

Oh thanks, that chart is remarkable!
So I guess nobody can tell what a puppy is going to look like, they're little surprises :)

You can somewhat 'predict' what color a pup will be, if they will be wolf grey (light or very dark) or red grey. But it can still change over time.

I'd say the biggest chance of a wolf-grey - is a very light puppy - as they seem to be very light as adults too - very light wolf-grey.. though more often than not they seem to have a light red underlay..

It may just be my poor memory acting up again...I do think I remember the recent J&J litter were pale and are now darkening (Paka & Nusia). But those pups are still considered wolf-gray in coloring, yes?

A red underlay is totally fine with me, I think it adds more color and is very pretty.

Then again, even if my future Tam would not have the ~*ideal*~ dream color I'd love my dog regardless. They're all wonderful looking, the wolf grey (with tints of red) (as Jackal has for example) coat is just my personal favourite.

I thought wolf grey was my favourite colour at first and then I started looking at pictures of black Greys and was really liking them. And THEN I was looking at pictures of red Greys and started really liking them. So... I decided I didn't care what colour pup I got since I no longer knew which colour I liked best :p

yeah, i liked whe wolf greys, then i liked the sams (red grey) and then the saga's (red black?) but i've always loved winnie since i saw puppy pics on facebook :P so color is not a huge factor anymore... at least it broadens the search horizons

There’s a battle between two wolves inside us all.
One is Evil. It’s anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies and ego.
The other is Good. It’s joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness and truth.

The wolf that wins? The one you feed!

I originally didn't know what color I wanted, so I kept stalking pictures. heh. When I saw pictures of Wyatt (Tarheel Jockey's Ridge), omg...I knew I wanted a red-grey, as deep and as much red as possible, the yellow eyes will be a plus. ;)

But it does seem that picking out a puppy that will be a red-grey, even the lightest shade, is difficult...picking the dark-colored puppies knowing they'll continue to lighten in color or, they'll have more black overlay is..how do I describe it, a gamble? lol. Either way, I'd still fall in love with the dog no matter what color it turns out since personality is the main thing I want to be "perfect". 8-)

The red ones are so lovely, too! I really love warm and earthy tones on all kind of animals!
And yes pretty much what Arianwenarie said, I'd fall in love with my dog no matter what shade it would turn into :3

that was the thought I had..
I really liked red greys (still really do!) but when Lynn was choosing a puppy for me I came to the conclusion, no matter which puppy she would choose for me I would love it and think it was just perfect and beautiful..

and I was right.. Sølve is one of the most stunning dogs I have ever seen.. she still sometimes take my breath away when I look at her..

Thank you for these pictures, Debby!
It's very interessting to see how much they change! Some of the brighter pups even turn out darker, and vice versa!

I like the picture of Jasper staring straight at the camera, he looks so serious in the pose as oppose to how he behaved in a hilarious goofy manner in those videos that you posted. I guess having Zora around made him more serious-minded.

I started off loving the pale wolf greys, but ended up with Saga who is a very dark red grey and I love her. Her personality makes me smile and her looks can take my breath away. It's part of the Tamaskan fun, guess what colour my pup will end up

Reddy-black :D

My favourite is probably the red-grey.. though I'd "kill" for a black-grey that looked like a black phase :D

I'm so jealous!!! Although I love balto to bit and wouldn't swap him l, I really wanted a black grey. Lynn do you think there's a chance balto might have black grey babies since Winnie is his aunt?

I'm not familiar with genetics...at all. But since Winnie's sire isn't Jackal and Geri is Winnie's half-sister, wouldn't that have an effect on the % possibility of Balto producing black-greys? I suppose Zuul would have to be a carrier of the black gene in order to pass it onto Winnie...unless it's a dominant gene in Winnie's sire and it showed that way?

Wow. I'm super confused now. lol! Hopefully, someone can help me out here before I dig myself into a deeper hole of confusion.
