So cute! There was another Tam in NY? I guess Frøya is the only Tamaskan New Yorker now.

Re: Feeding Raw AND Kibble?

You should never mix raw food with kibble during the SAME meal! This is because dogs have a short digestive tract that processes raw meat / bones very quickly. That's why feeding raw meat is totally safe for them, whereas it can sometimes make humans sick (we have much longer digestive tracts, rela...

Re: Male vs Female

I'm really happy I got a female. Initially I wanted a male for size and strength, but when I got Frøya I knew that getting a female was right for me. She's incredible attentive, and is rarely distracted when we play or do training exercises. From what i can tell in the dog park, males are somewhat m...

Aww thanks guys! I think as a breed they are stunning and it's safe to say they're all gorgeous! We get quite a few "what kind of dog is he" out on walks and so far, no one we've met has heard of them. We tend to shortcut to "a husky x shepherd" if we're met with blank stares! :) That's exactly wha...

Short legs?

Frøya is six months and 39 pounds last she was weighed on February 10th, almost a month ago. She's quite large for age from what I understand, but her legs are pretty short. She's certainly longer horizontally than vertically. My question is, is that normal for a tam of her age? Will her legs have a...

Re: Norman (USA) - available

Oh man I hope someone gets him. I'm curious to know who the owner was who gave him up, and who the breeder was who sold him. This is why breeders have a responsibility to do as much back ground checking as possible on their potential customers to avoid this sort of thing.

Re: Tamaskan ancestry breakdown

Thanks for the responses:-) Interesting stuff. I've just had it in my mind that malamute and GSD played a large role in the creation of the breed since these two breeds are prominently mentioned as ancestors on several sites, wikipedia and dogbreedinfo to name a few. Excerpt from wikipedia: The firs...

Re: Tamaskan ancestry breakdown

Nce, thanks for that breakdown. I'm wondering because I observe a lot of GSD physiological as well as behavioral traits in my girl. She does the shepherd thing where she walks around me in circles when i'm walking her off leash. And of course her ears and tail are very GSD. When people stop me in th...

Tamaskan ancestry breakdown

I've been looking at some of the other threads and the photos on FB, but it still remains unclear to me how much of which breeds are in Tams. Can anyone give an approximate estimation in percentages of how much GSD there is, how much malamute, siberian husky etc? And how much of the genepool is made...

Re: Should I discourage her to pull on the leash?

Thanks for all the responses. We have enrolled her in obedience training classes, so we'll work on that there. The solution you suggested blufawn, that she learn to distinguish collar behavior from harness behavior, is most desirable. Thanks again folks. And keep the advice coming. I'm especially in...

Should I discourage her to pull on the leash?

The reason I ask is because Frøya is a submissive dog, with no dominant tendencies what so ever. She responds to commands well and knows her place in the pack. However, the one thing she seems to refuse to understand is my leash jerking and "heel". She pulls the leash everywhere we go, not intensely...

I know, she does, but she's 39 pounds, which is quite large for a 5 1/2 month old. Henry the golden is massive, 75 pounds and very tall.

Re: When can I run my pup?

If she is a heavier than average female it is also important that you dont over do it with her as it can effect hips and shoulder in later life, along the same lines she should not climb stairs often or jump up and down from anywhere higher than your couch. Many short walks at this age is advisable...

Re: When can I run my pup?

Please wait at least a year before doing any type of paced running with your dog. Once you do start, remember that this is like teaching a child to run for the first time. You cannot just start out running a mile or two straight off the start. Gradually increase your distance as the dog gains endur...

Thanks for the input guys. Much appreciated. I'll wait for a while longer. That is quite heavy for a young female. When can I run my pup?

I have a six month old Tam pup approximately 40 pounds and I'd like to start running with her, and eventually have her pull sleds and carts.
