The collar on the last three pics is strange! Does it have a function or are you just waiting for him to grow into it :?:
It's a Tagg GPS tracker that snaps onto the collar. A little big for him at the moment but he doesn't seem to mind!

Not claiming that the option I chose is optimal for everybody, but it was recommended by my veterinarian. Embrace Pet Insurance out of Ohio. I notice the first featured Tamaskan Dog listed is Rikku. Nice verification process.

What's on offer there, exactly? Hard to tell from the home page.

Re: Annual vaccinations

Yeah, in these guidelines lepto and bordetella are considered "non-core" but have a recommended interval of one year when given.

Re: Annual vaccinations

I've been doing a lot of my own investigating the past couple days to satisfy my own curiosity. There appears to be strong evidence from several studies and updated vet organization guidelines that a 3-year interval core vaccination schedule is safe. I found these updated guidelines from AAHA to be ...

Apparently the humane society released a report along these lines last year. Didn't realize the humane society took such strong positions publicly! Good for them.

"The complaints, he said, came from people affiliated with a competitor. He added that his kennel had been inspected repeatedly by the American Kennel Club"

Hah! Right after press about how the AKC is inept at inspections. It all falls into place.

New York Times addresses puppy mills and the AKC

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/10/sports/many-animal-lovers-now-see-american-kennel-club-as-an-outlier.html?pagewanted=all Interesting read about a couple cases of the AKC failing miserably on inspection to identify inhumane conditions at registered breeders before a raid ultimately rescues the mist...

Re: Insurance

Okay, PetAssure it is for us then. The merchant discounts make it a no-brainer. I did some sleuthing and just by getting Orijen food every month from a particular online vendor (w/ free shipping) at a 10% discount off standard retail price through PetAssure, the program has already paid for itself a...

Re: Insurance

We use ASPCA pet insurance. They were actually the only company that had the Tamaskan breed listed. I was also able to get a package that included shots, and heartgard and flea & tic. I just quoted an 8-week Tamaskan on both. 90% reimbursement bronze, $200 deductible for Petplan. Level 2 ASPCA. ASP...

Re: Insurance

I ran across PetAssure (http://www.petassure.com) today in the course of reevaluating. It's $100/year for a flat 25% off all vet costs with no deductible or exclusions. Ran some more calculations and assuming an average $155/year standard vet procedure and vaccination bill provided by lab owner frie...

Re: Insurance

So, when an insurance company asks breed-type and Tamaskan is not an option (PetPlan), which breed is closest? Vlack is shown as purebred, would that be closest? There's an option for Mixed Breed - Large as I recall. That's what I was using. May as well take advantage of the mixed breed discount (p...

Re: Insurance

Huh, I wasn't aware of that factoid about Jackal. Good to know. Lower risk does not equal no risk, of course. Still, financially we're prepared to float a major emergency if need be. I'm willing to be convinced of its worth. From anyone with experience (hopefully not personal experience), what sort ...

Re: Insurance

My partner and I ran a pet insurance cost analysis as part of Tampup preparations (and out of curiosity). Petplan is indeed the best choice. Their rates were far lower and they didn't require costly add-on packages just to obtain hip dysplasia coverage. Pet plan has an annual $200 deductible -per in...

Re: Help me. Puppy training books?

I just picked this one up on Kindle and as a novice I've been really impressed with how straightforward and no-nonsense it is. The author is well-vetted, the training methods are positive and I feel like I'll be comfortable using them in combination with a weekly training class. Good luck! http://ww...

I once threw myself on the ground and rolled around and laughed like a mad-woman. Made the dog come back  Hahah, I really like that suggestion, and it's so true! If you makea spectacle out of yourself, your dog's much more likely to come back to you. I also heard that crouching or lying down f...

Extra bedroom -- what to do with it?

The townhouse we're expecting to move into in the summer has two bedrooms, but we only require one for living comfortably. I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for the best use of this room were we to intentionally assign it to the dog. My initial thought was using it as a replacement for a crate...

Welcome! How exciting for you to be meeting Tams for the first time this weekend. If you think they're beautiful in photos, just wait until you see them in person. :D Viewing things online for a long time always seems to trick the mind into having a strange sense of proportions, so it'll be nice to...

Re: Kibble (Dry Foods)

Who knew dog food was a topic so fraught with controversy online? I'm glad there's more of a consensus on this board. I as well am considering Orijen or Taste of the Wild for a future Tamaskan. When I got to looking more about it there seemed to be concerns among large dog owners about the high prot...

A second hello from Milwaukee!

Hi there! I've been lurking around here for a couple weeks, but since the TDR referred me here from Facebook I may as well use that as an excuse to introduce myself. I'm a grad student living with my partner noxbird in Milwaukee, WI, and we're hoping to obtain a Tamaskan puppy from a TDR-registered ...
