I think there are a lot factors that need to be considered. The more I talk with breeders, judges and conformation clinicians, the more I realize that not all faults are the same. Most of them will tell you structural faults are major faults. Shoulders that are not 45 degrees, weak hocks, poor movem...

She looks like she could be Alaskan Husky. Contrary to popular belief, some of the lines run small and only average a size around 45 pounds.

As Teyah's owner, I am very aware of the issue and am in direct contact with Points Unknown. At this time, all diagnosises are only speculation. The training company I work for offers Nose Games classes. Dylan and I have taken classes to learn to play game using his nose (like find the box with an object in it). He has done okay with it. Some days he enjoys the games more than others. These are fun ways to spend time buring off energy when i...

Re: What is the purpose of the Tamaskan Dog?
Prey drive is high with Northern breeds. I don't think it is very realistic to eliminate this trait if we want to keep the Tamaskan based primarily on Northern breeds (Husky etc.). Same goes for separation anxiety, and some other traits our Tamaskan show currently.. they come from the Husky backgro...

Re: What is the purpose of the Tamaskan Dog?
This is a really great thread and I had to read it a few times. This is something I have struggled with a lot; even more now as I have begun working with our local kennel club and other trainers. They always want to know what are dogs are bred for. Are they a guardian dog, herding dog, sled dog, etc...

Welcome to the forum. As an owner of both an RPK dog and a TDR breeder dog, there is a difference in health, upbrininging and support. Do your homework since this is a lifelong committment (and these guys tend to live a little longer than other large breeds).

Welcom and good luck with your service dog training. I have talked to a local service organization who is interested in Tamaskans after meeting us at a dog fair. I think some of these dogs love to work and they definitely love to be with their people. Please keep up posted on your progress!!

As Tracy said, I am lucky enough to have Dr. Sondel right here. He has been a fantastic resource and is only a phone call away. Here are a few things to think about. For US breeders, you will need a vet who is USDA certified to ship semen to another country. Not only do you need a reproductive vet, ...

Re: Annual vaccinations
I recently read an article (which I can't find now) that the US Veterinary School curriculum is being changed to coach pet owners about the use of titers and caution about over vaccinating. I was thrilled to see that the US vet schools have all agreed to this change in curriculum. I'm not sure when ...

Not really sure what we are trying to address here exactly. I think all pups should be registered so we can keep track of them... But I think all pups born to parents not tested or got bad results( hips, eyes, testicles not descended) need to be on pet restrictions until test on parents are complet...

Re: health tests for breeding
Sorry to get back on track, but before breeding, it is also wise to have your vet do a health check just to ensure both dogs are in good health and do a brucellosis titer. These are important in addition to the other health tests. Being proactive can save the litter instead of trying to deal with is...
