Hike Across America Team: Aatu, KBD and me

Post by martinbernstein » Mon Dec 19, 2011 4:37 am

This is the expedition team, consisting of me (Martin), Frøya the Aatu, and Torfinn the Karelian Bear Dog (10 weeks and 5 months in these pics).
Also pics of my gear. Feel free to ask questions about the gear. Lots of goodies there:)

Great shots! What is that little hand held thing, a computer? In the front to the left.

Thanks. That is a weather radio/altimeter/barometer/ten different other instruments in one. Basically it gives me an accurate reading of the present and future weather conditions in whatever area I am in.

I see a Hennessy Hammock... Best hammock ever! I have trained my tamaskan to sleep in mine just recently :) I also have the same two Cold Steel Blades. Do you have a sleeping pad, camp stove, water purification system, food bag system, extra batteries, first aid kit?

There’s a battle between two wolves inside us all.
One is Evil. It’s anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies and ego.
The other is Good. It’s joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness and truth.

The wolf that wins? The one you feed!

I believe it's February 2012 - February 2013 (yup just checked the website). Gotta love the GoPro though! Really neat little tool.

Thanks for the comments guys!

@Dozer and HiTenshi: I begin on February 16th 2012 and will hopefully finish the same date in 2013.

@AZDehlin: Hennessey Hammocks rule! They actually sponsored me with the hammock tent and insulation system. And Cold Steel is the only knife manufacturer I trust (save for Leatherman). I'm a big fan of alcohol stoves so I'm using one of Norwegian make. Food bag is a bear-proof tube. For water purification I use iodine tabs and carbon filtration. Extra batteries for all my electronics, yes. And I'm currently compiling an extensive collection of items for my first aid and dog aid kit.

You're in PA, right? Where do you hike? I've done secions of the PA Appalachian Trail. Rocky as hell, but beautiful!

@Convel: Yes, GoPro Hero 2 is the bomb dot com! I just received my RC lightweight plane which I'll bring along to mount my GoPro cam on and take awesome aerial footage and shots!

Hennessy hammocks are the only way to go. I love cold steel, they make some amazing over the top products, I also love Benchmade products. I have a fe alcohol stoves and have made a few out of pop cans. I have never used a bear-proof tube, but makes more sense if you don't find some good trees. I use a Katadyn Base Camp Water purification system and boiling if it need it... I have a hard time with the iodine tabs. Wraps are a must for dog first kit.

I grew up in Arizona hiking and camping but am currently living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and I love it. Small close knit communities, moose, bears, coyotes, fox, wolves all in the back yard. So much untouched wilderness up here :) Wish I had the guts to hike or dry land sled across the states with my tamaskan just not willing to do something like that by myself or have the cash to do it.

I hope you keep us updated. Part of me thinks you must be barking mad, but another part wishes I had the courage to do something as wonderfully challenging as that. I am sure it will be an adventure of a life time. Good luck.

I meant to mention (you never know when you're going to need them) do you have extra collars for your dogs? Also this stuff called Vetwrap (aka Petflex if you want to go cheaper) is always a good thing to have around!

I know that you're very well prepared but please be safe and don't freeze yourself.
Look forward to hearing about your adventures across the States and seeing your photos too.
Wishing you the best of luck as I pray to Siddharta for you and your two dogs to arrive at the goal line safely.

Make sure you have a doggie first aid kit! Never know what could happen. Also a class on dog first aid would be good (It's about the same as a person). Best of luck to you and your furry friends.
